Teen Leadership Programs

LEADERS-IN-TRAINING (LIT)
Campers entering grades 9, 10, 11, 12 as of September 2014
This program is an 8 week service learning experience for teens. Youth will learn the values of volunteerism and teamwork through a series of team-building games and experiences. Additionally, they will complete service-learning  projects at the Westside Family YMCA, Camp Westside and more. All participants will enjoy day camp activities including recreational swim, group games, and others. This program will serve as a transitional program for many teens between Teen Trekkers and our Counselor-in-Training program.

COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING (CIT)
Grades 10, 11, 12 *NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE TO THIS AGE GROUPING
Interested participants must complete a separate application, as well as have a successful interview and provide 3 positive non-family references for consideration. Participants must have successfully completed the LIT program.

The intention of this program is to give participants the opportunity for growth and development, and to train them to become counselors in the future. This 8-week program is created to provide a structure and atmosphere where individuals get to know themselves, each other, and all about being the best camp counselor they can be! Mandatory curriculum weeks will be chosen during the interview process; areas of focus within the curriculum will consist of, but are not limited to the following:
  • Learning all about Camp Westside and leadership skills.
  • Safety, working with children, and child development.
  • Certifications and professional trainings.
  • Developing creative and fun programs for campers and to allow participants to put these newly learned skills into action with our campers at Camp Westside. Participants will be guided during their week with the campers, and daily briefings will allow them to share what they have learned.

Finally, upon successful completion of the 8-week program, CITs have the opportunity to be asked to volunteer for weeks 9 & 10. Through the summer, CITs will also participate in many trainings including, but not limited to: basic first aid, CPR/AED, assistant life-guarding, and C.A.T.C.H. This program provides the perfect mix of experiential learning, leadership, and fun for a memorable summer. Click here to download the 2014 application.
