26.2 Miles and Still Smiling
The fun starts THURSDAY, JUNE 5 with a HUGE Kickoff Party at Bay View! Not only do we kick off the marathon and run a mile together, but we will have food provided by Zwiegles and fun for the whole family - land inflatables, our brand new climbing campus, swimming, dancing and much, much more!
Then, over the next 5 weeks, you need to run, jog or walk a total of 25 miles. Although this program is done mostly on the honor system and you can complete all of your miles on your own, we will meet every Thursday until race day for an optional training clinic. Each clinic will focus on a different topic, include a healthy snack and allow ample time to log in some miles. So make sure you come prepared to run or walk each week!
Finally, on THURSDAY, JULY 10, we’ll have our huge finish line celebration. Just prior to the BIG Webster Firemen’s Carnival Parade, the kids and their companion runners will finish the marathon distance as they complete the last 1.2 miles together as a group down a spectator-lined Main Street as a group, ultimately crossing our official finish line!
Help us spread the word. Join the 2014 Kids Marathon event page on the YMCA of Greater Rochester Facebook page and share the event with all of your friends!
How do I keep track of my miles?
At the Kickoff Party on Thursday, June 5, you will receive a “Miles Card.” Each time you complete a quarter mile run/walk, a race official or parent will sign off on your card.
Join us outside at Bay View’s Aquatic Center as we complete the first mile of your marathon together with your friends and family. There will be music, food, swimming, raffle prizes and other fun surprises to get your marathon off to a rockin’ good start.
Is there help along the way?
Of course! Although you’re welcome to complete the entire 25 miles on your own using the honor system, we encourage all participants to join us at our weekly training sessions at the Bay View Family YMCA or at the Westside Family YMCA and our trained staff will recognize those participants who have reached a “mileage milestone” along the way, go over proper running/walking techniques, review footwear, and other safety issues, incorporate nutrition and healthy snack ideas, answer any questions and, of course, log in some miles!
Race Day - Thursday, July 10
We’re teaming up with the Webster Firemen’s Carnival to offer one of the greatest, family-friendly finish lines ever! Complete the last 1.2 miles of your marathon together with the rest of the group as you run down a spectator-lined Ridge Road minutes before the BIG Webster Firemen’s Carnival Parade. Then enjoy the carnival and parade with your family and friends!
The final course begins on Ridge Road near Phillips. It ends 1.2 miles later at McAllister’s Sign & Print, next to Friendly’s. Although police and race officials will maintain a safe environment along the entire course, each participant is invited to have an adult companion accompany them along the way. All companions must pay a $10 fee to gain access to the race course, wear a matching bib number, and sign the waiver.
Sponsor a Runner
*NEW* This year you also have the option of sponsoring a runner that may not otherwise be able to participate in our Kids Marathon. Donate $26.20 and we will select a deserving child.
Each participant will receive an official Kids Marathon TShirt, race number, finisher’s medal and finisher’s certificate. Plus there are more rewards and incentives along the way!
