The Eastside Family Y welcomed Jay Shiner, CSCS, as the new Senior Program Director, Health and Wellness, beginning on January 30, 2012. Jay has over 22 years experience in strength & conditioning, fitness, sports medicine, and health club management including working with the Baltimore Orioles as the Major League Strength and Conditioning Coach. Prior to his tenure with The Orioles, Jay worked with The Rochester Red Wings and with University Sports Medicine providing sports performance services for athletes, teams and school systems in the Rochester area.
A native of Rochester, NY, Jay has bachelor's degrees in both Biology (with an emphasis on Kinesiology) and Organizational Management. He is an international lecturer and accomplished published author in the areas of strength & conditioning and sports medicine, including NSCA USA and Japan, Canadian Personal Trainers Association, IOC/International Skating Union, and the American College of Sports Medicine.
In addition to heading up the Health & Wellness Department at the Penfield location, Jay will focus significant effort on collaborations with the local medical community on chronic disease prevention and will offer community-based programs focusing on ACL injury prevention, proper throwing techniques for baseball and softball players for the prevention of elbow and shoulder injuries and sports conditioning.
