WXXI teams up with the Rochester City School District (RCSD) to sponsor a sweater and coat drive as a tribute to Fred Rogers and his example of being a caring neighbor. WXXI’s Sweater & Coat Drive will begin on November 5, 2012 and run for two weeks, ending November 16, 2012. During the drive, members of the community are asked to donate new or gently worn children’s sweaters and winter coats, as well as other clothing. Collection receptacles will be available at WXXI, the Little Theatre, RCSD’s Central Office, the Rochester Public Market and select YMCA of Greater Rochester branches. Collected clothing will be distributed by the RCSD to its students. Addresses for all sites are below.
Fred Rogers’ sweaters were all knitted by his mother. Each year she knitted a dozen sweaters, and at Christmas, she gave them to family and close friends. To help set the tone for a “comfortable” visit with his young viewers, Fred Rogers decided to put on a sweater and change into sneakers as a way to help children settle in for the half-hour program, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. One of his sweaters is on display at the Smithsonian Institute.
Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was a treasured series on WXXI-TV for many years. The station is proud to bring today’s young viewers a new series that builds on the pioneering Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Daniel Tigers Neighborhood, which airs on WXXI-TV/HD weekdays at 11 a.m. and Saturdays at 6:30 a.m., tells engaging stories about the life of preschooler Daniel, using musical strategies grounded in Fred Rogers’ landmark social-emotional curriculum. Through imagination, creativity and music, Daniel and his friends learn the key social skills necessary for school and for life. Ranking number five among kids 2-5 in September 2012, the series was PBS KIDS’ top program streamed online and on mobile.
Family Communications, Inc., the Pittsburgh, PA-based non-profit corporation, was founded in 1971 by Fred Rogers. The company continues to carry on his legacy through developing a wide range of materials for young children, their families, and the professionals who support them.
