My Y Story: Xaviour’s Best Summer Ever

Meet Xaviour. He’s 10-years-old. He’s been coming to YMCA Camp Arrowhead since he was four.

“Camp allows him to let go of the demands of a school year and relax with his friends,” said his grandmother, Connie, who cares for him.

But coming to camp almost didn’t happen for Xaviour. Without the YMCA’s Financial Assistance, Connie said she and her husband wouldn’t be able to send their grandson to camp.

“We are so thankful to be able to send him,” she said. “Camp provides him the opportunity to be with friends, get dirty, connect with staff and look forward to something every day.”

Aside from creating countless memories and making new friends, Connie has seen Xaviour’s ability to get along with others and work within a group improving each summer.  What she loves the most about Camp Arrowhead is that the staff remain practically the same every year.

“He benefits from the continuity,” Connie said. “No matter the group he is in, he’s able to connect to counselors he’s had in the past.”

Connie is looking forward to a few summers from now when Xaviour can take part in the Counselor in Training program, so he’s able to help make summers memorable for kids just like him.
