YMCA In-Person Classes

Variety of Group Exercise Classes to Take Place on Y Property

During this time that we have had to close our doors, we have been constantly learning and adapting to find the best ways to serve our members. At first, that was offering virtual Group Exercise Classes for members to enjoy at home. But now, as we wait for details on an official reopening, we are excited to share that the YMCA of Greater Rochester is offering Group Exercise Classes in person on Y property.

What to Expect

We have reached out to instructors from all across our Association to bring our members these classes, working with them to schedule classes at locations in the City of Rochester, the west and east sides of the city, and in the Southern Tier; and scheduling a variety of low and high intensity classes.

Classes will use little to no equipment. For some, such as Group Cycle, we will provide the equipment; but for classes, such as yoga/Pilates, members are required to bring their own mats, towels, water bottles etc. All classes – except for Aqua Fit and lap swim – will take place completely outside on YMCA property. Because of this, you are encouraged to use the bathroom before coming and bring your water from home.

All active YMCA of Greater Rochester members are able to participate in outdoor In-Person Exercise Classes. If a member’s membership is suspended, a member will be allowed to participate, and their membership will be unsuspended the following week.

Signing Up

All classes will require prior registration. Classes will be available to register the day before class takes place and close one hour prior to the start of class. If you haven’t already created an account using our Schedule’s page, you can learn how to do so – and register to for classes – here.

We will be able to safely accommodate 12-40 members, depending on the class. Attendance will be taken at each class when you arrive.

Class schedules will be posted where you normally find our group exercise schedule. You can also find them here and at the bottom of this page. This is new to all of us; we will continue to learn and grow and make changes and additions to the schedule as necessary.

Safety Measures

We will be taking our safety guidelines from the CDC and New York State. Before even coming to class, all members will be required to participate in the Y ROC Health Scan. If a member does not complete this, they will have their temperatures taken and answer health screening questions.

Any individual who displays any symptom of an illness will not be allowed to participate in class.

Members are required to wear a face mask or another CDC-approved face covering when coming to and leaving class, and when social distancing can’t be achieved.

Measures are being taken to accommodate social distancing. Class sizes will be limited and kept at a safe number based on physical space and registration. Spots for certain classes will be marked on the ground (when appropriate).

For classes that require the Y to provide equipment, such as Group Cycle, we will be cleaning each cycle before and after class. All other classes, such as yoga/Pilates, members will need to bring their own equipment.

We are so excited to offer our members this new way of safely staying connected and active during this time. We can’t wait to serve you and learn with you as we go.
