We will explore the many different ways to make light, and look inside different kinds of light bulbs. Participants will get a personal optical spectrometer to study the colors of light sources. We will see how the color of light can be controlled and changed, and how the human vision system works.
We will study how to capture light and focus it using different kinds of optical devices such as mirrors, lenses and diffraction gratings. We will see how these are used to make telescopes and other kinds of optical instruments. We will see how solar power systems work and learn about solar renewable energy.
Light can be thought of as rays, waves or photons. It really is all of those at the same time. We will see how these powerful ideas led to the most amazing kind of light – laser light. In turn, that led to fiber optics and now a global super high-speed internet.
We will see how liquid crystal and LED displays are made. Holograms are amazing examples of optical information storage. And finally, we will find out what light sounds like.
