Since 1998, the YMCA movement has been involved in character development, emerging with the four YMCA Core Character Development Values:
These core values are proudly incorporated into all Y programs and services to ensure that members and patrons in the community can learn, grow and thrive.
THE HISTORY OF THE AWARD
In 1998, the Southeast YMCA lost a valued Board member–Clark Pieper. Clark was an extremely engaged member involved with Y classes and the Haunted Woods, and also held the position of Secretary of our Board of Management. As Secretary, part of his responsibility was to recruit new Board members and he was a natural. He also had a knack for fundraising and helped the Southeast YMCA raise money to assist local families. With dedication and grace, Clark faithfully spread the word about the Y’s mission and good work to which it was dedicated. He lived and demonstrated the core values each day.
Upon Clark’s passing, his family established an endowment, which has been used to provide financial assistance to families and send two children to camp every year.
Additionally, an award was created in his name. The A. Clark Pieper Character Development Award, given yearly, is presented to the Board member who best displayed the four character development values. This prestigious plaque hangs in the lobby of the Southeast Y next to the showcase of Board members.
