Basketball was invented at the YMCA more than 130 years ago with a simple idea: use sport to bring people together through movement, teamwork and healthy competition. The YMCA of Greater Rochester is proud and excited to bring one of the sport’s best community events – the Gus Macker Tournament – back to the Flower City in 2026 at ESL Ballpark!

HISTORY

Gus Macker Basketball is more than just a game; it's a celebration of basketball, community and the spirit of competition.

Founded in 1974 by Scott McNeal in Lowell, Michigan, the Gus Macker tournament began as a small backyard gathering of 18 friends. Organized by McNeal—known as Gus Macker—and his brother Mitch, the event quickly gained popularity, growing from its humble beginnings into a nationwide phenomenon that brings people of all ages and backgrounds together through a shared love of basketball. In 1987, the McNeals moved the tournament to Belding, Michigan and eventually expanded into other communities, taking it on the road as the “Gus Macker All-World Tour.”
