TOP FIVE REASONS TO TAKE SWIM LESSONS

BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND CREATING STRONG SWIMMERS

Are you looking to enroll your kids in swim lessons? Or maybe you’re looking for lessons for yourself. If so, the YMCA of Greater Rochester is the right place for you!

Every year, the Y teaches people basic to advanced swimming skills, while also teaching how to be safe and comfortable in and around water. Our swim lessons help students develop the swimming skills that every person needs to be safe in the water.

Here are five reasons why you should enroll in swimming lessons at the YMCA today:

  1. Increase Your Awareness of Safety Around Water.
In this area, we are surrounded by water. Lake Ontario, Irondequoit Bay, Mendon Ponds Park, the Finger Lakes, the Genesee Rive, etc. and with these bodies of water, it’s crucial to be able to save yourself in case of emergencies. By taking swim lessons, your child is not only learning the invaluable skill of swimming, but also the importance of and how to be safe in and around water such as floating, treading water, and basic assists and rescues. We also offer lifeguard certification courses that can allow people to not only help themselves, but also help others.
  2. Build Self-Confidence.
During a swim lesson you will have the opportunity to try something new each class, have time to work on and practice your skills, and be able to master and achieve that skill. Being able to go from beginner to advanced swimmer builds confidence and makes it easier and more exciting to take on new challenges.
  3. Meet New People.
Swimming lessons are a great opportunity to meet new friends or spend quality time with family. Members can take advantage of open swim time at our Outdoor Aquatic Centers at Camp Bay ViewCamp Arrowhead and Camp Northpoint (open seasonally from Memorial Day to Labor Day) where they can meet friends from around the association.
  4. Enjoy Benefits of Exercise.
Swimming works all the muscles in your body and is one of the best cardiovascular workouts for all ages. For older adults, it is low impact, helps improve flexibility and mobility and builds aerobic capacity. The YMCA of Greater Rochester offers a variety of water fitness classes, all included in your membership.
  5. Learn a Life Skill.
Swimming is a very important life skill that pertains to many fun experiences such as beaches, boating, pools and other aquatic activities. Not only can you and your family be safe, but you can help others be safe.
