Traveling from New York City to Utica, New York

We recommend flying into JFK International Airport in New York City. Most international staff spend at least one extra day in NYC to break up the traveling. You can also fly into the Newark Airport in Newark, New Jersey. You will need to get public transportation into NYC to get to the train station.
To get from NYC to Utica you will want to take an Amtrak train from Penn Station. If you plan on heading to Utica the same day you land in NYC, you can take the Airtrain from JFK to a place called Jamaica Station. Jamaica Station is hub for public transportation and gives you access to the subway. From Jamaica station, you can take the subway to Penn Station where you will be able to catch the Amtrak to Utica.
If you plan on spending a few days in NYC, using the subway is the best way to get around the city. Taxi cabs can be expensive and public busses take longer to travel. There are several hotels and small hostels in NYC that you can get to via the subway.
You can get an Amtrak ticket at Penn Station or you can also get the Amtrack ticket ahead of time on the Amtrak website. Getting it ahead of time may be a better option to save some time. I have included a link to their website below.
We recommend flying in at least one day before the pickup date to break up the travel. It is easiest to fly in the day before the pick-up date, spend one night in NYC, then take the train from NYC to Utica on the pickup day. On the day we pick you up we will make a stop at Walmart so that you make any last-minute purchases before heading to camp.
Camp will provide bedding for international staff, so you don’t need to pack any with your luggage. Bedding includes blankets, a pillow, fitted sheet, flat sheet and towels. We recommend purchasing any toiletries such as toothpaste, soap, etc, after you arrive.
Be prepared for all types of weather. Please check the packing list we have sent to you for recommended items to pack. A typical day at camp is warm but it can often be a bit cold in the mornings and evenings, especially if you are travelling from a warmer climate. Temperatures here can range from 50°F to 90°F. We also recommend bringing a raincoat or poncho for occasional rain.
