At the Y, we are all about community. It will be created throughout our building at the Sands Family YMCA, but it will have a dedicated space right here in our Rayburn Family Community Room. This is the place for our Active Older Adults to gather for conversation and coffee before and after classes. We have comfortable seating and a fireplace to enjoy during the winter months, as well as a space for seminars, community education sessions, and more. In the evening, the Rayburn Family Community Room is the spot for families and individuals to regroup, have a snack or get some work done.
The Teaching Kitchen will host intergenerational programming with our youngest members and Active Older Adults. We’ll have cooking programs for our kids and peer-to-peer classes that will show parents how to make creative lunches for their kids, along with hosting nutrition seminars and more. The kitchen opens into our Rayburn Family Community Room, making for even more opportunities to host special events with our Active Older Adults.
This space is a multi-purpose area for all things youth, tweens, and teens. The West Herr Innovation Station is home to 3D printers and a laser cutter. We will also have classes around art, STEM, coding, gaming, design, and more in this space. It will be the place for our younger members to hang out, do homework, or socialize with their friends. During the daytime, we’ll have enrichment programming for our preschoolers.
In the Prince Aquatic Center, members will find two pools – a family pool that will be 85 degrees year-round for swim lessons and open swim and a six-lane exercise pool that will be 82 degrees for lap swim and more. Members will also find a whirlpool and dry sauna for those post-workout needs or just a time to relax. One feature that’s sure to be a family favorite is the splash pad that will be right in the Prince Aquatic Center. Families can splash the afternoon away – no matter the weather. This space will also be home to swim lessons, fitness classes, and more.
The Sands Family Branch has three large locker rooms: a universal space, as well as dedicated women’s and men’s spaces. There are approximately 100 lockers available for day use in the women’s and men’s locker rooms and approximately 50 lockers available for day use in the universal locker room. All locker rooms have direct access to the Prince Aquatic Center.
Our Main Gymnasium boasts six basketball hoops and is able to accommodate three pickleball courts. Our youth sports programs and some daytime activities will also utilize this space. Our dividing curtain gives us the ability to have multiple groups utilizing the space at once.
Our Turf Gymnasium is perfect for soccer, flag football and other sports. This space will also be home to some high-intensity group exercise classes and our new large-screen Interactive Projection Games for kids.
We are proud to bring a new service to our YMCA here in Canandaigua – a full-service early learning center. The YMCA has been a leader in childcare for decades and we’re thrilled to be able to grow our impact with the Mickey Sands Child Care Center.
Named for longtime member and great supporter of the Canandaigua Y, Mickey Sands, this Center provides our families with care for children six weeks to five years old. This space features classrooms where children can learn through play and engagement, with the M&T Boat House, an amazing room for all groups to use dedicated to building on gross motor skills. There is a large soft-play structure, as well as interactive projection games to keep kids moving and learning.
Youth Development is one of the core pillars of the YMCA, and we’ve been able to provide that through our before and after school programs, camp, and youth offerings in our branch – we’re excited to take the next steps in providing more with the Mickey Sands Child Care Center.
This colorful and engaging indoor activity room features a large soft play space for children to explore while developing their gross motor skills through climbing, crawling, and more! The M&T Boat House will be available for members to use some evenings and weekends when the Mickey Sands Child Care Center is not in session. See the schedule online at RochesterYMCA.org.
Here is where you will find your traditional cardio and strength equipment – treadmills, ellipticals, free weights, and weight machines. You will also find our new circuit system, EGYM. EGYM is strength equipment that is connected with technology to track your progress and is included in your membership. The functional zone is a space for exercise that supports strengthening everyday movements such as pushing, pulling, lunging, and core strength.
We have three separate studios for a variety of group exercise classes – including one dedicated to cycling. The Cycle Studio has 40 bikes and a raised instructor platform. The new Cycle Studio allows us to welcome in more members to our cycle classes than before. The other studios house our additional group exercise classes, ranging from mind/body classes, like yoga, Pilates, and barre to high intensity classes like Les Mills classes and anything in between.

The YMCA of Greater Rochester is dedicated to improving the overall well-being of the community. One of the ways that is done is through our partnership with UR Medicine.
Expanding upon a partnership that began in 2004, which created the first medical and wellness complex of its kind in the northeast at the Eastside Family Branch, the Y, and UR Medicine share a mission to make the community the healthiest it can be, offering preventive care, biometric screenings, nutrition education, and disease interventions and management.
Continuing in that tradition, F.F. Thompson Hospital, an affiliate of UR Medicine, opened at the Sands Family YMCA in October. The newly named Mary Clark Thompson Family Practice is a primary care facility with two physicians and one physician assistant.
With its own separate entrance, the space features 11 exam rooms, two treatment rooms, and five offices. This means there is room for an additional physician and an additional advanced practice provider to join the practice in the future.
Thompson believes this collaboration is a great opportunity to provide personalized medical care alongside facilities that promote physical activity and lifelong health. Integrative health is a trend nationally, and the Y and UR Medicine Thompson Health are proud to be part of it.
