The YMCA of Greater Rochester has partnered with First Tee – Western New York to provide 20 youth with free golf lessons this summer. As a recipient of the Jerry Stahl Scholarship, made possible through a collaboration between the Oak Hill Foundation, Rochester District Golf Association and First Tee WNY, the kids and teens in the Y’s program get lessons in addition to equipment, course passes and more, opening the game of golf in such an accessible way for youth who may not have the chance otherwise.
"I think this has been a great opportunity for the YMCA just to expand our outreach, and be able to offer a program, with no cost barriers, to some kids who may have never had the opportunity to play golf before." said Amanda Pollard, Sports & Family Director at the Maplewood Family YMCA.
"We focus on three main things here; we focus a lot on chipping, a lot on putting, and a lot on driving. Driving is definitely a fan favorite throughout all of the participants, but it's really cool to see them be able to build the fundamental steps in all three. And also, just teaching them the language, and the scoring and just how to play the game in general."
