Traditional Camp Programs (Entering Grades 2–10)

Whether joining us for a single week or diving into a full two-week session, traditional camp at Gorham is packed with outdoor adventure, skill-building, and lifelong memories. Campers are grouped into age-specific villages, ensuring developmentally appropriate activities and a strong sense of belonging from day one.

Traditional: Two-Week Camp

The Full Gorham Experience Our signature two-week format allows campers to truly settle into the rhythm of camp life, build independence, and achieve their goals.

  • Deepen Friendships & Skills: With 14 days on the lake, campers have the time to master new skills in their elective tracks and forge unbreakable bonds with their cabin mates.

  • Dynamic, Rotating Programming: The schedule rotates throughout the two weeks to ensure a fresh, engaging lineup. Campers will experience legendary all-camp games like Gold Rush, Wells Fargo, and Commando, alongside creative events like Ham Jam and Carnival.

  • The Weekend Experience: Two-week campers unlock our special weekend programming, including the spirited camp-wide Coliseum Cheer Off and the traditional backcountry overnight out on the property.

Cabin Placement & Bunk Requests: Campers are assigned to cabins based on their grade and gender identity. We know coming to camp is a big step, so we will gladly honor up to two reciprocal roommate requests (campers must be in the same village, session, and request each other during registration).

Questions about which session is right for your camper? Reach out to our Camp Director, Paul, at  CampGorham@Rochesterymca.org.

Traditional: One-Week Camp

A Taste of Adventure Perfect for first-time campers or those with busy summer schedules, our one-week option delivers the magic of Gorham in a condensed, action-packed stay. One-week campers integrate seamlessly, sharing cabins, meals, and daily activities with our two-week campers.

  • Session "A" Highlights (First Week): Kick off the session with the high energy of our Opening Campfire, setting the tone for the week and introducing classic camp traditions.

  • Session "B" Highlights (Second Week): Dive into the Gorham Games—an exciting camp-wide showcase of teamwork and friendly competition—and wrap up the experience with our reflective Closing Campfire ceremony.

  • Extend the Fun: Depending on availability, one-week campers who fall in love with the experience can request to extend their stay for the second week to keep the adventure going!

  • Dedicated Supervision: Cabins are staffed with trained counselors who live in-cabin with campers around the clock, prioritizing safety, mentorship, and inclusion.

  • Cabin Dynamics: Campers share daily routines, care for their shared space, and participate in evening cabin chats that strengthen bonds and encourage reflection.

Cabin Placement & Arrival
At YMCA Camp Gorham, we are committed to providing a living environment where every camper feels physically safe, emotionally affirmed, and respected. Rooted in YMCA core values and Praesidium child protection guidelines, our cabin life emphasizes active staff supervision, personal privacy, and intentional inclusion. We offer Girls+ and Boys+ village accommodations so families can choose the space where their child feels most supported and safe, paired with private shower stalls, fair bunk selections, and daily check-ins that foster genuine belonging.

  • Gender-Specific Housing: Camp Gorham’s cabins are gender-specific:
  • Girl+ Cabins: Designed for girls, trans, and non-binary campers
  • Boy+ Cabins: Designed for boys, trans, and non-binary campers
  • Bed Selection: To ensure equity, beds are chosen by campers together once all children in the cabin have arrived on Sunday check-in.

Traditional Camp Activities

Our specialty tracks are categorized into Land, Water, and Creative activities, allowing campers to choose electives where they can master new skills, build confidence, and have fun.

  • Horseback Riding (Add-on Elective): Camp Gorham is proud to be accredited by the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA). Campers (ages 10+) receive progressive instruction grouped by ability level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) tailored toward trail riding. (Campers must bring riding boots/shoes with a heel and long pants; helmets provided. Campers not enrolled in the elective can still enjoy scheduled cabin ring rides or barn care.)

  • Boating & Waterfront Activities: Set on our private lake, campers build paddling and balance skills through canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), alongside open swim and lakefront fun supervised by certified lifeguards.

  • Waterskiing (Add-on Elective): Campers can add specialized waterskiing instruction to their camp week, building balance and technique behind our camp boat on Darts Lake.

  • Morning Responsibilities: Campers start their day with pride, purpose, and energy through our traditional early-morning options before breakfast:

    • Polar Bear Dip: Take a crisp, refreshing morning plunge into the lake to wake up and earn the badge of a true Polar Bear.

    • Golden Horseshoe: Head up to the barn at dawn to help care for, groom and feed the Gorham herd.

    • Camp Garden: Get hands in the soil by watering, weeding and tending to the vegetables and plants in our camp garden.

    • Cardio Club: Lace up your sneakers for an invigorating morning run, zumba class or a stretch to kickstart the day.

  • Flagpole: Gathering together each morning and evening at the flagpole to raise and lower the colors, share camp announcements and sing camp songs as an entire community.

  • All-Camp Games & The Coliseum: High-energy, camp-wide traditions where all villages unite for epic games of strategy, teamwork and spirited competition:

    • The Coliseum: A legendary, spirited Gorham tradition where the entire camp gathers for friendly challenges, massive village pride and unforgettable camp-wide games.

    • Classic Camp Games: Signature favorites like Gold Rush, Wells Fargo, and Commando played across the property.

  • Two-Week Camper Overnight Experience: Campers enrolled for a two-week session take part in a classic backcountry tradition—packing up gear, heading out with their cabin and counselors, and spending a night camping out under the Adirondack stars cooking over an open fire.

  • Opening & Closing Campfires: Welcoming the session with skits, cheers, and traditions at the opening campfire, and coming together at the end of the week for a reflective closing ceremony under the Adirondack sky.

  • Evening Embers: A quiet, reflective cabin tradition to close each day, where campers gather with their counselors to share daily highlights, lessons learned and words of encouragement before lights out.

Counselor in Training

Designed for 16-year-olds entering 11th grade, the Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program is the capstone of the Gorham leadership journey. This multi-week experience bridges the gap between camper and staff member, blending hands-on mentorship, outdoor adventure, and personal growth to prepare young leaders for the future—both at camp and beyond.

What to Expect:

  • Community Building: CITs bond as a close-knit cohort, building trust and teamwork through group challenges, peer mentorship, and a signature three-night, four-day backpacking expedition across Camp Gorham’s backcountry.

  • Service: Participants give back to the camp community through hands-on stewardship projects, taking pride in improving Gorham’s facilities and trails while earning 40 hours of certified community service.

  • Staff Training: CITs participate in extensive counselor development workshops covering group dynamics, activity facilitation, child behavior management, conflict resolution, and emergency safety protocols.

  • In-Cabin Experience: Putting theory into practice, CITs step into camper cabins alongside experienced counselors to gain real-world, supervised experience mentoring younger campers and leading daily cabin routines.

How to Apply:

Admission to the CIT program is selective and begins with an application and interview process. To learn more or start your application, please contact us at campgorham@RochesterYMCA.org.
