Wilderness Programs

At YMCA Camp Gorham, our wilderness programs take youth beyond the pines and into the heart of the Adirondack backcountry. Designed for campers seeking higher challenges, these immersive expeditions use the natural landscape as a transformative classroom. Campers unplug completely to learn outdoor living skills, navigate rugged waterways and trails and build genuine relationships with themselves, others and the natural space. Whether paddling through pristine lake chains, scaling mountain passes or setting up backcountry camp, participants discover that their capabilities stretch far beyond what they imagined. Through hands-on teamwork, environmental stewardship and real-world problem-solving, our wilderness tracks foster unshakable self-reliance and deep, lifelong bonds.

CAMP MAKERS

Camp Makers – On-site builders and construction
(1-Week Service Experience | Entering Grades 9–11)

Leave a lasting mark on Camp Gorham’s campus while learning practical, real-world trades. In this week-long project, participants roll up their sleeves to design, construct and restore essential camp infrastructure—such as lean-tos, footbridges, boardwalks, picnic pavilions or outdoor program benches. Under the direct supervision of experienced staff, campers gain hands-on training in tool safety, carpentry fundamentals, site measurement and collaborative building techniques. It is an empowering, sawdust-filled week where teens transform raw materials into functional camp landmarks that will serve generations of campers to come, all while earning certified community service hours.

TRAIL CUTTERS

Trail Cutters: Gorham Path Restoration
(1-Week Service Experience | Entering Grades 9-11)

Grab a Pulaski, clear the corridor, and shape the paths that weave through our 1,500-acre property. In this hands-on week, the Trail Cutters crew works directly on Camp Gorham’s expansive trail network—clearing blowdowns, carving out new scenic routes, improving drainage, and building bog bridges across wetlands. Participants learn essential backcountry trail-maintenance techniques, sustainable corridor design, and proper tool safety under the guidance of skilled outdoor staff. It’s an active, rewarding week of hard work in the woods, leaving improved, accessible trails for the entire camp community while earning certified community service hours.
