WHY I GIVE… A DONOR’S STORY: JENNIFER MCEWEN

BY JENNIFER MCEWEN, BOARD MEMBER, CORNING FAMILY YMCA

When my husband and I, along with our 3 kids, moved to the Corning area 7 years ago, we were looking for ways of integrating into the community.  Since we moved during the summer, we also wanted to get our kids connected to activities and making friends.  The Corning Family YMCA was the perfect answer to all of our needs.  Since then, we’ve had the opportunity to experience so many of the programs the Y offers and made some lasting friendships in the process.

About a year after our move, I joined the Board of Management.  As a board member, I see beyond the benefit to my own family.  The impact that our Y has in our community is truly remarkable. We believe that all children and all families deserve the opportunity to participate in the enriching experiences offered here.  The Y never turns anyone away because of their inability to pay. The Y is so important in creating healthy connections between all people of all ages.

As a Corning YMCA board member, I have “skin in the game” and my donation-both financial as well as time- helps our Y to serve its mission.  I’ve seen how the Corning Y nurtures kids and improves health and well-being.  It supports our neighbors and responds to needs in our community.

When you come to the Y, take a look around and beyond the people on the treadmill next to you.  You’ll see teens coming to spend time together after school in a safe, fun, and healthy environment.  You’ll see kids learning to swim in a positive setting that is committed to their success.  You’ll see people who don’t otherwise get out of the house, coming together to interact and get some movement in their day.  The Y isn’t just a gym for the healthy and fit; it is a place where all people in all shapes, sizes, abilities, and ages can be comfortable attaining individual goals in a supportive atmosphere.

The Corning Family YMCA serves a very important mission here in the Corning Valley and I’m proud to support it. You can support the Y too.
