YMCA of Greater Rochester staff celebrate opening of airnasium and YMCA Camp Arrowhead

FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND STRUCTURE IN MONROE COUNTY TO SERVE 500 MORE CAMPERS STARTING THIS SUMMER

ROCHESTER, NY – The YMCA of Greater Rochester is pleased to announce the opening of a brand-new airnasium at YMCA Camp Arrowhead.

An airnasium is an open-air, roofed gymnasium that is utilized for outdoor recreation. The new airnasium at YMCA Camp Arrowhead features turf for sports like lacrosse and soccer, as well as bathrooms and locker storage.

“The concept for spaces like an airnasium has been realized over the past couple of years in communities across the country and we’re excited to bring it here to Rochester,” said Ernie Lamour, President & CEO, YMCA of Greater Rochester. “As a leader in youth service, our new airnasium gives us the unique chance to add to the breadth of programming the Y can offer.”

One of the biggest programs areas that this will immediately impact is our summer day camp at YMCA Camp Arrowhead. With the airnasium, the Y is able to serve an additional 500 campers this summer alone.

“Being able to support even more families with care for children in the summer is huge,” said Cady Schneible, Center Director, YMCA Camp Arrowhead. “Since 1960, we have been pushing innovative ways of service here at Camp Arrowhead. Our airnasium is the next example of that, so we can continue to ensure kids and teens create lifelong memories at here with us at camp.”

This $1 million investment into youth is that next example in that line of thinking, as this first-of-its-kind structure in Monroe County will be in use spring and through fall.

“This has been another great opportunity to help bring to fruition the Y’s ideas for new ways of serving youth and families in our community,” said Jim McKenna, Senior Vice President, LeChase. “LeChase is proud to play a role in bringing the first airnasium to the greater Rochester area and we can’t wait to watch the Y’s impact on our community grow with this space.”

The airnasium will be utilized at camp this summer, with members having access during open swim times Thursday-Sunday. Youth sports, preschool programs, and rentals will begin in the fall.
