FIVE ESSENTIAL WATER SAFETY TIPS TO KNOW

MAY IS WATER SAFETY MONTH AND THE Y WANTS YOU TO FEEL CONFIDENT AND SAFE IN AND AROUND WATER

As summer approaches, and kids want to beat the heat – whether that’s in pools, lakes or rivers around our area. Now is the time for parents and caregivers to reinforce the importance of water safety and equip their kids with the essential skills to keep them safe in and around water.

Here are five tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming experience for all.

1. KNOW YOUR LIMITS

It's ok to take breaks or stay in shallow water. Avoid roughhousing, breath-holding contests or swimming too far into waters that are advanced for your swim level.

2. SWIM WITH A BUDDY

Never swim alone, no matter your skill level. Having a buddy ensures that someone is there to help or call for assistance if an emergency arises.

3. TAKE BREAKS AND STAY HYDRATED

Swimming can be more physically demanding than it feels. Take regular breaks and drink water to avoid fatigue and dehydration, which can increase the risk of accidents.

4. LEARN TO FLOAT AND TREAD WATER

Basic survival skills like floating and treading water can help you stay calm and conserve energy if you become tired. These skills are especially important in deeper or open water.

5. GET COMFORTABLE SUBMERGING YOUR FACE

Being able to safely put your face in the water helps improve breathing control and reduces fear. This foundational skill supports overall swimming ability and water confidence.
