Sonny and Ann Marie

The YMCA of Greater Rochester strives every day to create meaningful experiences for our members. As an organization we are passionate about sharing with our members and community why there is truly no place like this place in hopes they can feel a sense of belonging, connection and support within our community. But it’s even more powerful when our members step into the spotlight to tell their own Y stories. Recently, two of our members were nationally recognized. Ann Marie Caruso, Eastside Family YMCA member, recently shared with TODAY.com her experience at the YMCA of Greater Rochester. Ann Marie feels truly thankful for waking up each day with the mindset to embrace new opportunities and make the most of the day, in part to what she gets to look forward to as a member of the YMCA. As a participant in our Active Older Adult programming, there is always an exercise class, lunches and craft classes that are fun and make her feel connected to her community.

Last year, that community showed up when they surprised her with a 100th birthday party, bringing together family, friends and YMCA members and staff to celebrate with her. Ann Marie believes that the activities, connections and experiences she has embraced at the Y have allowed her to live a richer, happier and more meaningful life.

At its heart, the YMCA of Greater Rochester is about embracing new experiences and opportunities—no matter your age. At 70 years old, Northwest Family YMCA member Sonny decided to dive into a new chapter, training as a lifeguard to meet new people. Early in his role as a lifeguard, Sonny quickly immersed himself and built strong, meaningful connections within the YMCA community. Maintaining an active routine and staying healthy has always been important to Sonny, but becoming a lifeguard was the missing puzzle peace to what makes his life truly fulfilling. Sonny recently was featured in Reader’s Digest as part of the YMCA of the USA’s partnership with the publication and their “The 100 Years Strong Project.”
