The YMCA offers something for all — a welcoming space where members in our community can grow, learn and explore their interests while feeling fully supported, whether a member is training to compete in a sporting event or is enjoying their time with their family.

For members of different abilities like Michelle Gagne, the Y becomes something more personal: a place that inspires her to keep coming back.

At the Eastside Family YMCA, Michelle found her “why” in the pool. There, she discovered not only a new skill but a deeper sense of confidence and connection.

At first, Michelle was hesitant to swim. The water felt unfamiliar, and like many beginners, she was unsure of what to expect. But with encouragement from her father, Doug, she decided to give it a try. That first step made all the difference.

“She has loved going swimming; she loves coming here to the Y,” Doug shared. “She looks forward to it. We come here a couple of times a week.”

What began as uncertainty has turned into enthusiasm. Now, Michelle eagerly heads to the pool, where she follows her own exercise routine — swimming, doing push-ups along the edges of the pool, assisted walking along the poolside and squats to help strengthen her legs.

Recently, she reached an exciting milestone: learning the doggy paddle. At the mention of the doggy paddle, Michelle lights up and demonstrates the movement with her arms and hands.

Michelle’s progress has been steady and measured, but meaningful. As Doug puts it, Michelle is making progress in very small steps, but it's constant progress.

Another key part of Michelle’s progress has been the pool environment itself. Michelle’s mother, Mary, says the pool is both therapeutic, with its warm water, and easy for Michelle to use because of its accessible design. That sense of ease in the water has extended beyond the Y as well — her family shares that she now feels more confident using the pool at her home, applying what she’s learned at the YMCA.

The joy Michelle finds at the Y is another part of what has made her experience memorable. She loves getting splashed by the water bucket, watching kids play and making new friends.

It’s been just as incredible for her parents, too, witnessing how far she’s come. What once felt uncertain has grown into a space filled with excitement and connection for Michelle and her family.

Beyond physical gains and progress, that sense of belonging — being seen, welcomed and supported — is what truly matters at the Y. This has made all the difference for the Gagne family. Each visit to the Eastside Family Branch reinforces that they’re part of a community that truly cares.

“The staff here is just phenomenal,” Mary says. “They recognize [her], welcome her every time we come through the door. It’s just a real inclusive environment.”

As the Gagne family reflects on their experience at the Y, they share that they wish they joined sooner, and strongly encourage anyone considering joining to not hesitate. For Michelle, the YMCA is more than a place to swim; she’s found joy in every step of her Y journey, no matter how big or small.
