At the YMCA of Greater Rochester, we believe that taking care of your body means more than just staying active — it’s also about staying safe.
National Injury Prevention Day is a reminder that small steps can make a big difference in preventing accidents and keeping our bodies healthy, strong and ready for all of life’s adventures — in and out of our branches!
Here are five tips to help you move safely and confidently every day on your health and wellness journey:
WARM UP BEFORE YOU WORK OUT
Jumping right into your exercise routine without warming up can lead to muscle strain or joint injuries. Take five to 10 minutes to stretch, go through a dynamic warm-up routine or go for a light jog. This helps increase blood flow, loosen muscles and prepare your body for activity.
FOCUS ON PROPER FORM
Whether you are lifting weights, swimming laps or joining a Group Exercise Class, proper technique is key. Not sure if you’re doing a movement right? Our Group Exercise instructors, Wellness Coaches and Personal Training staff are here to help you learn safe movement patterns that prevent injury and effectively build strength.
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
Pain is your body’s way of asking for a break. If something doesn’t feel right, stop and assess — pushing through pain can lead to bigger problems later. Rest, stretch or modify your movement when needed.
STAY HYDRATED AND NOURISHED
Dehydration can increase your risk of injuries and can make it that much tougher to finish your workout. Keep a water bottle close by, and fuel up with nutritious foods that help your body recover and perform at its best.

SAFETY FIRST
Safety starts with awareness. Make sure your workout area is clear of clutter, equipment is in good condition and you have proper footwear and gear. A safe space supports safe movement.
Proper gear can make a big difference in injury prevention, too. And that goes for all areas of our branches — whether that is using goggles while swimming, basketball shoes in the gymnasium, or lifting gloves (when necessary) while in the Wellness Center.
Injury prevention isn’t just for athletes — it’s for everyone. By taking a few mindful steps each day, you can protect your body, stay active and keep doing the things you love.
