THREE LOCATIONS TO HOST PROGRAMMING FOR ATHLETES

Rochester, NY — For more than 170 years, the YMCA of Greater Rochester has made it its mission to provide a place where people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can come together and find connection.

Beginning this winter, the Y is excited to grow its offerings for people of all abilities to find connection through sport and fitness through a new partnership with an organization that believes deeply in supporting all, Special Olympics New York – Genesee Region.

“We are proud to team up with Special Olympics to provide another avenue for these incredible athletes to learn, grow and thrive,” said Ernie Lamour, President & CEO, YMCA of Greater Rochester. “For so many of us, me included, sports provide an incredible outlet for a healthy lifestyle and social connection, working toward a common goal with your teammates.”

Starting in December, three locations within the YMCA of Greater Rochester Association will be offering sports programs for Special Olympics athletes ages 16-30. The Bay View Family YMCA and Northwest Family YMCA will host floorball, and the Sands Family YMCA will host a swim team program.

“We are so excited to begin this new partnership with the YMCA and for the additional opportunities it creates for local Special Olympics athletes!” said Betsy Mihm, Senior Director of Programs, Special Olympics New York – Genesee Region. “Together we can provide more ways for athletes to train and compete in sports and fitness programs throughout the year.”

Registration for floorball and the swimming program will open at 10 am, on Monday, October 19. The seasons will begin December 5, leading up to the regional and state games in January and February, respectively.
