Now that it’s April, it’s officially Move More Month! The YMCA of Greater Rochester is here to help you get your move on, whatever way that works best for you and your lifestyle.
So here are a few things you should know:
MOTION IS LOTION
Exercising for 150 minutes per week can decrease your mortality rate by up to 30%. While it is highly important to stay active, not everyone needs to “move” the same way.
WALKING VS. JOGGING
Cardiovascular health is one of the best ways to improve your overall health. Did you know that you can burn just as many calories as when you walk at a rate of 5 mph (or higher) as when you jog?
Whether you walk on the treadmills when visiting our Wellness Centers at our branches and neighborhood centers or walk on the track at branches like our Corning, Eastside, Sands and Schottland Family YMCAs, you’re not only boosting your cardio health; you are strengthening your bones and reducing body fat.
But do not take running lightly, either. You can reduce the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer through running. It also improves cognitive function and overall mental health.
Looking for a fun way to get some running in? Basketball is an easy place to start! We have programs for kids to get moving on the court, but we also offer Open Gym times that often bring members together for pickup games, too.
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
You do not have to go on your wellness journey alone! The YMCA of Greater Rochester has a ton of options for you to get moving with others.
From our Group Exercise Classes and Buddy Personal Training to sports like Pickleball, we offer several options to increase your activity in group settings.
One other group offering we provide, too, is our Mind/Body Programs. Whether it’s Gentle Yoga and Qigong or Tai Chi and the Pilates Reformer sessions and classes, we have some group offerings that are more focused on movement rather than high-intensity interval training.
SPORTS REPORT
The Y offers tons of Sports & Recreation programs, too, for adults and kids, including Flag Football, Climbing Club for Rock Climbing and Tumbling. So, depending on what type of movement you are looking for, our sports programs provide several options to choose from.
Looking for a specific sport? Visit our Sports Programs on our website!
HEALTH-BASED MOVEMENT
We also have Evidence-Based Programming designed to assist our members who may be battling through health challenges.
Our LIVESTRONG program provides a Group Exercise setting for members who are actively or recently recovering from cancer treatment. Pedaling for Parkinson’s and Boxing for Parkinson’s both are designed to help members combat the neurological impact that can be had on people living with Parkinson’s Disease.
So whatever movement works best for you, visit us and see how you can keep moving throughout April and beyond!
