August is National Wellness Month — a time dedicated to focusing on self-care, creating healthy routines and setting wellness goals. At the YMCA, we understand that wellness is a journey that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional health. We’ve put together a few tips to help you lead a healthier and happier life!

THE IMPORTANCE OF NATIONAL WELLNESS MONTH

National Wellness Month is a reminder to prioritize our well-being in a world that often demands so much from us. It’s an opportunity to pause, reflect, and make intentional changes that can have lasting benefits. Wellness is not just about being free from illness; it’s about thriving in all areas of life.

What does wellness look like at the Y? We thought you’d never ask! From sweating it out in Group Exercise Classes to finding your inner Zen with programs like our Pilates Reformer Personal Training and Classes, we the Y offers programs that enhance your wellness for mind, body and spirit.

PHYSICAL WELLNESS

Physical activity is a cornerstone of wellness and the YMCA offers a variety of programs to keep you moving. Remember: regular exercise not only improves physical health but also boosts mood, energy levels, and overall quality of life.

Looking to ramp up your physical fitness? Check out the various Personal Training programs we offer. Looking to get yourself or your kids involved in sports like Basketball, Tumbling or Pickleball? Check out our Sports & Recreation offerings.

Want to get into the pool? From various levels of Swim Lessons to Water Fitness Classes like Aqua Zumba and Aqua Yoga, you can get your aquatics fix in to improve your physical wellness too.

MENTAL WELLNESS

Mental health is just as important as physical health. The YMCA provides resources and programs to support mental well-being, like Meditation Classes or Restorative Yoga. One of our biggest examples of this is our Active Older Adult (AOA) Programming, which provides our AOA communities at branches with programming that combats isolation, promotes community, and encourages life-long learning.

And if you are looking for some true time to yourself for rest and relaxation or restoration, check out what we have to offer with our HydroMassage Chairs.

NUTRITIONAL WELLNESS

Healthy eating is a key component of wellness. Our In the Kitchen Programs — which include adult classes and Jr. Chef classes for kids — are designed to educate you on making better food choices while also enjoying the process of cooking healthy meals. Whether you are looking to learn more about balanced diets, meal planning, or cooking healthy recipes, the YMCA has resources to help you on your nutritional journey.

SOCIAL WELLNESS

Building strong social connections is vital for overall well-being. Connecting with others can provide support, reduce stress and improve mental health.

The YMCA is a place where friendships are formed and communities are built. Outside of group exercise classes, we offer many group activities — like branch-specific Events, Family Activities, playing your favorite games in our Metro Esports Gaming Labs, and Birthday Parties — to enhance your social wellness.

We also offer programs like LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, which is designed for adult cancer survivors chronically fatigued from their treatment or disease. In addition to the benefits of the physical fitness portion of the program, it provides participants with a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, YMCA staff, and members.
