Cancer touches most everyone we know. Whether it’s your own journey with a personal diagnosis, serving as a caregiver, or playing a role in a support system, we are not immune to the disease. That’s why the YMCA of Greater Rochester is proud to play a role in the fight against and awareness of cancer. One of the most impactful roles comes from our LIVESTRONG and STAYSTRONG programs held at various locations.
“Prior to this LIVESTRONG program, I had no confidence at all,” said Linda Karr, a LIVESTRONG participant at our Northwest Family YMCA. “When I joined the group, [it was] joy and happiness again. The YMCA is the perfect place to come to build upon what you already have to regain strength, confidence, courage.”
For so many like Karr, the Y has played a transformative role in the journey – physically and emotionally. That’s why we are pleased to announce that this year, we are expanding our partnership with the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and the Wilmot Cancer Institute for Wilmot Warrior Weekend.
“We are excited to partner with the YMCA of Greater Rochester to help elevate the mission and success of Wilmot Warrior Weekend,” said Tyler Bowers, Senior Director of Community Events, Wilmot Cancer Institute. “It’s a great way to get some physical activity in while supporting local cancer research and care.”
“We have a strong, longstanding partnership with the University of Rochester Medical Center not only with medical practices in some of our branches, but with the programs we offer throughout our Association,” said Pam Cowan, Chief Experience Officer, YMCA of Greater Rochester. “Being able to partner with URMC, to raise awareness about cancer research and the support that is out there, is incredibly important to our mission and for our members.”
This year, the YMCA is set to have a team participating in Warrior Weekend, as well as sponsoring the Kids’ Zone. Leading up to the event, every cycle class throughout the YMCA of Greater Rochester the week of August 26 will be turned into a Warrior Class, with instructors wearing special cycling jerseys and sharing important facts about cancer and the importance of research and support.
“Our Wilmot Warrior Weekend raises funds for cancer research that will ultimately lead to the development of new cancer treatments,” said Dr. Jonathan Friedberg, Director of Wilmot Cancer Institute. “The event has always been one of my favorites; it’s a weekend full of inspiration where survivors, families, oncology care teams, and community members come together to celebrate how far we’ve come in the fight against cancer, and honor those whom we have lost to this devastating disease.”
