At the YMCA of Greater Rochester, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. National Inclusion Week (September 23-29) is a time to reflect on the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels welcome, valued and respected.

The YMCA has long been committed to fostering inclusion, standing up for all, and ensuring that people from all walks of life — regardless of age, race, gender, religion, ability, or background — have equal access. That goes for our Programs and Child Care services, or having the opportunity to indulge in our amenities across the Association with our Experience Scholarship.

WHY INCLUSION MATTERS

Inclusion is essential for maintaining healthy community morale. Here’s why inclusion is so important:

- FOSTERING A SENSE OF BELONGING: When people feel included, they know they belong. A sense of belonging is key to mental well-being and happiness. At the Y, we strive to create an environment where everyone feels like they are a part of a supportive community.

- PROMOTING DIVERSITY OF THOUGHT AND EXPERIENCE: An inclusive environment brings together people with different perspectives, backgrounds and experiences. That diversity enriches our community, fosters empathy towards peers, and helps bring people together to develop connections they may not otherwise have the chance to.

- BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS: Inclusion ensures that people from traditionally marginalized groups are not left behind. It helps break down barriers to participation, whether it’s access to resources like the ROC City Membership Type or educational opportunities like the Power Scholars Academy (PSA). At the Y, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.

- STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY: By encouraging inclusivity, we can address social issues such as inequality, discrimination, and isolation, making our neighborhoods better places for everyone. From Family Activities to Active Older Adults (AOA) Programs, we have room for all throughout the Association.

HOW THE YMCA PROMOTES INCLUSION

At the YMCA of Greater Rochester, we’re committed to being a place where everyone belongs. Here are a few ways we promote inclusion:

- PROGRAMS FOR ALL ABILITIES: We offer adaptive programs and activities designed to meet the needs of individuals of all abilities. From inclusive fitness classes like Functional Fitness for All to accessible swim programming like Sensory-Friendly Swim, we strive to ensure everyone can participate in our offerings. Please ask our friendly staff at your home branch to learn more about programs.

- CREATING SAFE SPACES: The YMCA is committed to being a safe and welcoming space for all. Not only does this align with our Mission, but it also is a direct result of our Advancing Equity Statement, as we look to serve all and find more ways to meet the members of our community where they need us most.

- CULTURAL COMPETENCY AND SUPPORT SYSTEMS: Our staff undergoes regular training on cultural competencies, and we also strive to enhance the staff experience through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). ERGs provide a space for support, networking and development of YMCA professionals.

The YMCA of Greater Rochester currently has four ERGs — African American, PRIDE, Women’s, and Emerging Leaders.

MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER

As we celebrate National Inclusion Week, we acknowledge that inclusion is not a one-week effort but an ongoing commitment. At the YMCA, we continue to build inclusive spaces where everyone has the opportunity to grow, learn and connect. The key is working together; because together, we can make our community a place where everyone belongs and is able to find their tribe.
